When people say things like “I love the Pastor’s message, but I enjoyed the worship more”, then you know that such folks know nothing about worship, because the message they just heard is worship.
Worship is greater than music. Anything that glorifies God and reveals Jesus is worship. Music can help us express our worship to God, but music in itself is not worship. Worship is first expressed in the heart, then music can follow suit.
Worship may not even require sound, rhythms or any musical instruments. The sound produced in the heart outweighs that which is produced outside. The call of the soul is bigger.
We have made a synonym of worship and music, but worship is greater than music. The sound of the piano is not what pleases God, but the man playing it. The sonorous soprano voice on the microphone is not what glorifies God, but person behind the mic.
Paul talks about singing with grace and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
Ephesians 5: 19 [KJV] – Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
Colossians 3: 16 [KJV] – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Worship is first expressed in the heart, then music can follow suit. We are instructed to sing with grace and make melody in our hearts to the Lord, but only a heart which God’s word dwells richly in all wisdom and yielded to the Spirit can do such.
CONFESSION – The word of God is active and alive in me. True worship is expressed in my heart to the Father always. I worship with the ability of the Spirit and in the reality of the word of God that has gained ascendancy in me. Glory to God!
