Jealousy is a sin and is not characteristic of a Christian; rather, it shows that we are still being controlled by our own desires. In order to combat jealousy, we need to become more like Jesus and less like ourselves. We can get to know Him through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship with mature believers. As we learn how to serve others instead of ourselves, our hearts will begin to change.
Jealousy happens when a person feels that a relationship that is of importance is threatened by someone else outside of the relationship, be it romantic, platonic, friendship, parent-child, sibling etc. Jealousy is dangerous and is a killer. Relationships end because of jealous conflicts and people kill other people because they are jealous.
Jealousy can also occur in the context of competitive situations, such as the workplace or education. Jealousy differs from envy; the latter is where you desire something that another person has, although sometimes you can feel both at the same time.
The more we focus on ourselves and our own desires, the less we are able to focus on God. When we harden our hearts to the truth, we cannot turn to Jesus and allow Him to heal us (Matthew 13:15). But when we allow the Holy Spirit to control us, He will produce in us the fruit of our salvation, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
Tackle your feelings now. Learn to question your jealousy every time that it emerges and Change any false beliefs that might be fueling your jealousy. Beliefs are changeable by choice. If you change your belief, you change the way you feel. Choose to tell yourself a belief that is nurturing and supportive, and you’ll feel better.
Bear in mind at all times that feelings of jealousy are about you, not about the other person. Develop control over your attention so you can consciously choose what thought plays in your mind and what kind of emotions you feel. GRACE TO YOUR HEART.
